The number of plastics kits made of the Mustang is enormous. Fortunately Airfix have done a pretty good job of their latest, that covers the late WW2 period. Parts are included for a British Mk. IV version or an American P-51K. The former an aircraft based at RAF Ackington, Northumberland and the other In Italy July 1945.
Once the range and power of the Mustang enabled it to escort long range bomber raids deep into the third Reich air supremacy was assured. Must have been a lonely and nerve wracking experience. The aircraft was developed as a direct result of a British Air Ministry requirement and the RAF and Commonwealth air forces used the aircraft extensively during WWII, as did the US. The British designation for the later P-51D version was Mustang IV, with the Dallas built P-51K, which used a different Aeroproducts propeller, referred to as the Mustang IVa.
