The restrictions imposed on Germany as part of the Versailles treaty saw if focus on wheeled armoured cars. The development of these centred around the need for mobile support around reconnaissance units. This final variant of the type was the SdKfz 234/4. The vehicle was fitted with a 75mm Pak 40 gun.
These eight wheeled vehicles were mainly used for reconnaissance and policing duties during the North African campaigns. With a maximum road speed of 80 k.p.h., they had an advantage over the tanks, it was decided to mount in them 50mm and later 75mm guns. To accept the heavier armament the rurret was removed from the SD.Kfz.234 becoming a self-propelled short or long-barrelled 75mm gun.
Weighing 10 tons, it could be driven from either end with two steering wheels, overall length excluding gun was 6m.
