Constructed from 1949 - 1980 by Wickham of Ware and numbering over 600, these small motorised trolleys were the first mechanised tools to be used by permanent way track gangs. The motor trolley allowed the gang to reach a remote track defect quickly, with the car able to haul a small trailer loaded with tools, sleepers, rail chairs, keys, fishplates and any other part which might be needed. The trolley was light enough for the gang to lift off the track, allowing the line to be re-opened once the gang had arrived on site.
