Highly requested night fighter version of the iconic Bf109-E, featuring newly tooled parts to produce the radio detection unit blister on the lower fuselage.
While not actually radar equipped, the modifications to this Bf109 E model enabled to the pilot to locate radio transmissions from enemy aircraft and zero in on their location – a good idea in theory, but difficult in practice.
The type was rare and not terribly successful, but paved the way for the development of radar equipped aircraft of other types as the war continued.
