Dundas Models OO9 DMLR04 WD Class C WW1 Light Railway Bogie Open Wagon Fixed Sides Kit
These class C bogie wagons used two of the 4-wheel chassis to carry a longer and higher capacity open wagon suitable for haulage by the small steam locomotives and petrol tractors. The use of bogies allowed the wagons to traverse the rough and often heavily shelled tracks behind the front lines, This kit constructs a model of a rebuilt wagon with the sides fixed in place and a small door fitted, making it easier to discharge loose loads like aggregates.
After the armistice many of these wagons continued to be used by local, industrial and agricultural light railways in France and Belgium.
Although the idea of making the sides removable was sound it proved of little utility in active service. The need for a flat wagon was rare so the sides were rarely removed and if they were would often get left behind and lost. Many were later rebuilt with the sides fixed and small door fitted, allowing loose loads like aggregate to be discharged in a controlled manner without resorting to shoveling.
