Designed by Sir William Tritton of Foster & Co as a pursuit tank, production of the MkA Medium Tank, nicknamed "Whippet" commenced in October 1917. First used in battle on March 26th 1918 during the great German offensive, they are most remembered for their role in the battle Amiens on August 8th 1918. The crew of 3 or 4 was accommodated at the rear with twin engines in front, each driving a set of tracks through its own gearbox and transmission. An armoured fuel tank projected forward between the front horns.
