These wheels could be fabricated from iron strip, so were cheaper to manufacture than cast spoked wheels, making them the most popular choice for private owner wagons and for several railway companies until the three-hole disc wheels came into widespread use in the late-1930s. Wheels have long service lives and as axles would be changed as unit with their bearings, overhauled and refitted to another wagon many BR built wagons could be seen running on split-spoke wheelsets in the 1950s.
