Renown & Repulse were built quickly after the Battle of the Falklands using the 15" guns and turrets that were scheduled to go into the R-class battleships, whose keels had been laid. When they joined the fleet, just after Jutland, the Navy was dismayed to see two rows of portholes along the hull indicating no armoured belt! They did not even have wooden planked decks when built. Repulse was taken in hand first and given the armoured belt which had been made for Almirante Cochrane (see HMS Canada) covering the lower row of portholes but Renown soldiered on until the end of WW1 without the extra armour.
