Kashino was built expressly to convey the 18" guns and turrets for Yamato-class battleships between Kure Arsenal and the shipyards where the other battleships were under construction (Osaka & Nagasaki). The first trips were to deliver guns and turrets for Musashi (since Yamato had been built at Kure) and when it was decided to convert the hull of Shinano to an aircraft carrier, the specialist work was ended and hatch covers were fitted to allow the conveyance of general ammunition to troops in the field. Kashino was sunk by USS Growler in late 1942 off Formosa.
