Introduced in the UK at the end of 1967 and officially launched at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1968, the MkI Ford Escort was manufactured at Ford’s Dagenham and Halewood plants. It was originally classed as a small family car but the marque was to last decades with modifications and upgrades along the way, making it one of the most appealing Fords of all times with young and old alike. It was available as a 2 or 4 door saloon as well as a 3-door estate and features included rear-wheel drive, four speed manual gear box or 3-speed automatic. The car had a petrol engine on both the 1.1L and 1.3L models. Its contemporary styling included a subtle ‘Coke bottle’ styled waistline and the ‘dog bone’ shaped radiator grille, small features but very trendy for the time!
