LNER DX type open container
Along with the familiar box containers introduced in the 1920s a large number of open container types were designed for conveying loads not requiring weather protection.
Containers offered the ability to shift loads quickly between road and rail transport without reloading. Special container flat (conflat) wagons were built with tie-down rings for securing the containers, however containers were frequently seen being carried in conventional open wagons, secured with ropes around the wagon buffers and tarpaulin lashing points.
