The LMS built 2,050 of these large size cattle wagons between 1923 and 1926, replacing many of the short wheelbase small and medium size wagons which had come from the pre-grouping companies. The LMS had a huge cattle traffic varying from local trips to market, to block trains of imported Irish cattle which could need to move long distances from port to market. These longer wheelbase wagons permitted running at higher speeds, reducing journey times and the need to unload cattle for exercise and feeding en-route. The fleet would have been kept fully utilised and these wagons were still in use into the early 1960s. The transportation of cattle in the UK ceased in the mid seventies.
