The Bismarck, the flag ship of the German navy, was the largest German warship, apart from the Tirpitz and had a crew of 2,092 men. Put into service on 24.08.1940, on 18.05.1941 she put to sea in Operation Rheinibung. Together with the Prinz Eugen however she was soon discovered by British air reconnaissance planes. On 24.05.1941 they encountered the Hood which was sunk by the Bismarck. On 26.05. after a long pursuit, she was hit by a torpedo from the air and engaged by the British warships King George V and HMS Rodney. On 27.05 the Bismarck was scuttled by her own crew.
