The Super Hornet is the most modern fighter and combat aircraft in the U.S. Navy. Shortly after it entered service in 2002, it successfully took part in combat missions over Iraq. In the Air Superiority Role for Fleet defence, all Squadrons have now converted onto the two-seat F/A-18F variant. In addition to the Fighter-Bomber role the F version is also used as a Refueller. The F/A-18F can attack enemy targets with great accuracy using JDAM and "Laser-Guided Bombs". It also has an extensive arsenal of the latest generation guided missiles. The F/A-18 F is practically a completely new aircraft: the airframe is 30% larger than that of the F/A-18D. Further modifications include more powerful engines, a 33% greater fuel capacity and giving a longer range. Its operational radius for attack missions is 40% greater than that of its predecessor. Together with ECM pods, 8 tons of weapons and/or fuel tanks can be carried on its 11 external stations.
