Hardwood dowel is usually spruce, often called white wood, which is used for many purposes, ranging from general model construction work to highly specialised uses in wooden model aircraft and many musical instruments. The Wright Brothers' first aircraft was built of spruce. Left outside it cannot be expected to last more than 12-18 months, depending on the type of climate. It is commonly referred to�by several different names, including North American timber, SPF (spruce, pine, fir) and whitewood.
