The Yamato was the first of the Yamato-class battleships built by the Imperial Japanese Navy, and along with the second, Musashi, was the largest and only super-dreadnought battleship ever equipped with a 46cm gun. Yamato was commissioned in December 1941, shortly after the outbreak of the Pacific War, and she became the flagship of the Combined Fleet in February 1942. Her first battle was in Operation Midway in June 1942, and in June 1944 she took part in Operation Hound and the Battle of the Marianas. In October of the same year, she conducted 46cm main gun bombardment on an American escort carrier unit in Operation Shoichi-go. did. In April 1945, she sortied into Okinawa during Operation Tenichi-go, but was sunk by an air raid by the US military.
