Working for many years as a professional artist and illustrator in the publishing industry Peter Barnfield's understanding of image composition is evident in his photography. His railway photographs record the end of the steam era on Britains' railways and with it the history of the country railway and scenery in the days before the private motor car was in widespread use.

The 'Withered Arm' was a term used for the former LSWR route to Plymouth around the north of Dartmoor. Although serving the coastal holiday towns of North Devon and North Cornwall the remainder of the route passed through sparsely populated country and moorland. The line was never able to compete with the Brunels' Great Western coastal route via Dawlish for the traffic to and from Plymouth and Cornwall and as British Railways focussed on the economics of these long country railways the route closed in October 1966.
