This kit contains enough parts to create two small (2 lever) and two large (4 lever) ground frames, complete with chequer plate floor and instrument frame. Once assembled and painted these models will add further character and realism to the trackside scene. The point drive rods from the lever/ground frame can be created using the SS89 and SS90 point rodding kits.
Ground frames are widely used in locations where locking of points and signals is necessary but the location is not a 'block post' for the purposes of signalling trains.
These locations include manually worked level crossings, industrial sidings and goods-only lines connecting to main running lines and goods yards, where the frame allows a shunter to operate several points safely from one location.
To economise on staff costs many lineside stations and some branchline terminii had signal boxes replaced by ground frames from the 1920s onwards, the frame locking the line for passenger running and being unlocked and worked by the train crew to round round the train and access goods sidings. The ground frame set can be used to fit out the small, ground level signal box kit SS29 and with level crossing kit SS56.
