A culvert is small bridge allowing (usually) a small watercourse to pass under a road or railway, frequently passing through an embankment built across a valley.
Timber culverts were not common on mainline British railways as stone was normally readily available to construct a more substantial arch. Timber was used more widely on temporary railways, like quarrying lines and by some light railway companies.
