BR Corporate Blue

BR blue era diesel and electric locos. Eras 6-8.
The 88bhp Ruston 88DS is the 'big brother' to the 48DS, designed to be powerful enough to replace a small steam shunting locomotive.
Ruston 408493 was ordered by British Railways Western Region for use at the Signalling & Telecommunications Department workshops at Reading. Delivered in January 1957 as Departmental number 20 the locomotive spent its entire life at Reading, housed under the Vastern Road bridge when not in use. Renumbered in 1973 under TOPS, to 97020 the loco was withdrawn in April 1981, replaced by a surplus Barclay class 06 locomotive from Scotland and it was disposed of at Reading by Cartrights of Tipton in August 1982.
This model is finished in the standard BR rail blue livery with wasp-striped ends.

The model has a heavy diecast chassis block within which is fitted a powerful motor with twin flywheels and drive shafts to both trucks, providing drive to all four axles. This mechanism provides plenty of traction power for hauling realistic trains, even on gradients. The bodyshell is accurately shaped, recreating the distinctive style of the Hymek locomotives and completed with separately fitted handrails and detailing parts.

Introduced to service as D212 in May 1959 and the third of the production series to be delivered, 'Aureol' was officially named in 1960. By 1974 when the locomotive was re-numbered 40012 under TOPS the locomotive's nameplates had been removed, yet despite this the locomotive's name was painted onto the bodyside before 1985 withdrawal. Reinstated in 1985 to assist with the remodeling of Crewe Station, restricted to a top speed of 35mph, and given the departmental number 97407.
This extension to the service life of number 40012 resulted in the locomotive being purchased for preservation.

The British Rail Class 47 or Brush Type 4 is a class of diesel-electric locomotive that was developed in the 1960s by Brush Traction. A total of 512 Class 47s were built at Brush's Falcon Works in Loughborough and at British Railways' Crewe Works between 1962 and 1968, which made them the most numerous class of British mainline diesel locomotive. They were fitted with the Sulzer 12LDA28C twin-bank twelve-cylinder unit producing 2,750 bhp (2,050 kW) – though this was later derated to 2,580 bhp (1,920 kW) to improve reliability – and have been used on both passenger and freight trains on Britain's railways for over 55 years. Despite the introduction of more modern types of traction, a significant number are still in use, both on the mainline and on heritage railways. As of January 2020, 78 locomotives still exist as Class 47s, with further examples having been converted to other classes; 32 Class 47s have been preserved, and 34 retain "operational status" on the mainline.

Engineered to deal with the steep gradients of the Calder Valley route which it became synonymous with them being named 'Calder Valley sets', the Class 110 was one of the first DMU's with the highest power to weight ratio of any naturally aspirated unit. In 1982 the middle trailer car was removed from most sets to reduce maintenance costs and further improve acceleration along the northern route.

The popular Class 46 Diesel Locomotive returns to the Bachmann Branchline range with this OO scale model depicting No. 46045 in BR Blue livery after its headcode panels were removed and sealed beam headlights were fitted. Together with the Class 44s and 45s the classes were commonly known as the ‘Peaks’, because the Class 44s had been named after mountains in England and Wales, however all but one of the 56 Class 46s went unnamed.

The Bachmann Branchline model combines a finely-proportioned bodyshell with extensive detailing throughout, including separately fitted cab handrails, windscreen wipers, lamp brackets and sandpipes. With a powerful 5-pole motor fitted with twin flywheels which drives both bogies, these models have plenty of pulling power to haul even the longest trains. With a 21 Pin DCC decoder interface, it’s easy to add a decoder or sound decoder and speaker for use on DCC

A detailed model of North British 'Baby Warship' type 2 or class 22 diesel hydraulic locomotive D6352 painted in the BR corporate rail blue livery with full yellow ends.

The Dapol model represents the later body style with split headcode boxes and will be powered by a flywheel drive mechanism with Dapols' smooth running 'super-creep' motor and 40:1 drive ratio, which provides excellent slow-speed performance. The chassis incorporates directional lighting, a 21-pin DCC decoder socket and space for a sound system speaker has been designed into the fuel tank.
Due to the locomotives' amusing ability to shed the lower bodyside valences Dapol have supplied these as separate sections, along with detailing of the chassis sides, to allow missing panel details to be matched.

Carrying D5557 as its first number, the locomotive was initially allocated to the Ipswich Engine Shed before moving to a great many others across the country. Given the number 31139 under TOPS, upgraded to Class 31/4 specification in 1984, re-numbered again to 31438. The storied locomotive's final reallocation to Crewe occurred in 1988, with another re-numbering to 31538 in 1993 following modifications, with the locomotive remaining in BR service until 1995. The locomotive was chosen for preservation and is currently located at the Epping Ongar Railway numbered 31438.

One of just three Deltics to never receive plated headcode boxes, 55020 is also notable for retaining the mountings for the cab roof horns worn during the early 1960s. Our model is based on its 1976 condition with standard-sized domino headcodes, although alternative smaller dots will be provided.

The Brush Type Twos – Class 30s and Class 31s – are the next Diesel Locomotives to get the Bachmann Branchline treatment, with models of these long-lived prototypes joining the Branchline OO scale range for the first time. Following in the footsteps of their N scale counterparts from Graham Farish, these new OO scale models have all the hallmarks of the Branchline Class 37 & 47 locomotives and more.

Depicting a Class 31/1, this locomotive has had its Mirrlees engine replaced with an English Electric 12SVT and the Branchline model faithfully recreates this, with the correct roof exhaust ports and 12SVT engine block detail visible through the bodyside windows.

Now fondly remembered by enthusiasts the BR blue period seemed quite drab at the time, as BR finally managed to forge a consistent corporate image. Following the end of steam many diesel classes gained their own dedicated following as the 'non-standard' classes were slated for withdraw. Thousands followed the Westerns, 24s, 25s, 44/45/46 'Peaks' and the mighty Deltics as each class in turn was displaced by newer locomotives, specialist heavy freight engines and the futuristic HST trains.

As ever the only constant on the railway scene of the 1970s and 80s was the change and this group includes the first railfreight grey liveries, a precursor of business sector liveries to come.
