Built between 1898 and 1902 by the Midland Railway, these elegant non-corridor coaches were built for use on express routes. The coaches were equipped with lavatory compartments accessible from the seating compartments on either side for passengers travelling longer distances and survived in secondary service LMS 'inter district' train sets until the British Railways era.
