Coaches - British Rail

Representing the BR Corporate & InterCity eras. 1965-1995. During the mid-1960s British Railways was looking for a 'new image'. The end of steam traction was in sight, the second generation high-horsepower diesel locomotives were being delivered and detail design for the modern mark 2 coaching stock was underway. Many innovative ideas were tried out in an experimental set of coaches, along with a new livery of blue with grey window bands, a new name, British Rail and the still familiar double arrows logo.
Twenty years later BRs' InterCity express passenger business unit was looking to refresh its image with a more dynamic livery, resulting in a very pleasing stripe livery which accentuated the length of coaches and impression of speed.

Neatly detailed model of the Southern design 2+2 planked PMV / CCT 4-wheel parcels vans. These vans were built from 1919 until 1951 and could be found all over the British railway network in revenue service until around 1980, then in use as engineering support and stores vans into the late 1980s. Many continue to serve as mobile or static stores van on heritage railways, with a number of now grounded bodies donating their chassis to restore 4-wheel coaches.
Model finished in BR rail blue livery as number S2536S. Through the 1960s and 70s these ex-SR vans in maroon and blue liveries were used on Red Star parcels services to smaller depots, including regular workings to Fort William!

The bogies are fitted with metal wheelsets, whilst the standard N scale coupling is attached via a NEM coupling pocket to the close coupling mechanism that is fitted to the carriage floor, which operates in tandem with the bogie. Inside each model is an interior featuring the prototypical layout of tables and chairs, whilst the icing on the cake is the livery application, using authentic colours, logos and fonts to give every model an exquisite appearance.

New and detailed models of the BR air conditioned express passenger stock built from the early 1970s. BR was one of the first European railways to offer air conditioned accomodation as standard on principal services.

These models are of the Mk.2F coaches, the last of the Mk.2 series build (1973-1975) and almost identical to preceeding Mk.2E coaches (1972-73 build), the design changes relating primarily to the air conditioning plant. These two builds formed the backbone of the InterCity locomotive-hauled coach fleet during the 1970s and 80s.

This model of the second class brake coach with open plan seating is painted in the BR corporate blue and grey livery.

The British Railways Mk1 was the designation given to BR’s first standard design of main line coaching stock, and one of its most successful. Built from 1951 until the early 1960s to augment and replace the array of ‘Big Four’ and earlier ‘pre-grouping’ designs inherited from the LMS, LNER, GWR and SR, BR took the best features from several of these types to produce the new steel-bodied design. As a result, the Mk1 was stronger and safer than any of the inherited types that came before it.

A highly detailed model of the LMS design of engineers inspection saloon car, a type which has had a long life with the national railway network and many now available for hire on heritage railways.
Inspection saloons were used by the divisional civil and signal engineers to make site visits before major engineering projects and to inspect track and structures where local staff had reported developing faults. The two saloons were equipped with end windows for track and signal viewing and large tables allowing drawings and plans to be laid out for discussion. Between the saloons a small kitchen was provided, from which the steward could supply refreshments and even conjure up a full meal if required.

This model carries the British Rail corporate blue & grey livery with yellow ends. Yellow ends were usually applied so the inspection saloon could be propelled to or during a site visit.
