GWR Coaches & Wagons

Great Western Railway 1835-1948
Among the fleet were specialised vehicles, including vans with the GWR telegraphic code ‘Mogo’ which were designed to carry motor cars and carriages. Mogo vans featured double doors at each end, allowing cars to be loaded and unloaded. The vans could also be used for general merchandise, loaded via their bodyside doors, when not otherwise needed for their intended cargo. This Branchline model depicts one such ‘Mogo’, sporting an accurate bodyshell with fine plank engraving and further moulded detail. The chassis employs metal wheelsets of the 3-hole disc variety, whilst the brakes, brake handles and associated gear is all included. At either end metal buffer heads are fitted and the bufferbeam is completed with cosmetic coupling hooks. The simple but distinctive livery is applied using accurate colours and typefaces to produce a van fit for any OO scale model railway.

Highly detailed model of the small GWR shunters trucks used to provide a place for the shunter to ride safely around goods yards, coupled to the shunting engine. The box and flat floor of the wagon provided storage space for tools and spares, including shunters poles, brake sticks, train tail lamps and spare couplings.

The Bachmann model has been designed to recreate several different designs of shunters trucks as the differences were mainly in detail design. Three versions have been displayed in Bachmanns' display cases covering designs with round turned type handrail knobs, straight angle-iron grab iron brackets and inward-angled angle-iron brackets.

This wagon is painted in the GWR goods grey livery lettered for use at Park Royal, a London depot with a number of major businesses including the Guinness brewery and bottling plant.

Fruit D wagons were large ventilated wooden bodied vans designed for the fast and efficient transportation of fruit. They were first constructed in the 1930’s for use by GWR and later in the 1950’s by BR. The vans themselves had three large double side doors for fast unloading and loading and were usually seen as part of passenger or fast goods trains. Out of season these vans were used as parcel or luggage vans. As road transport took over as the principal way of transporting fruit, fruit D vans were converted and used as permanent parcels or stores vans and remained in service in this way into the 1980’s.

The Fruit D was the last of the GWR design ventilated fruit vans, this design with three side doors not appearing until after WW2. The majority of these vans were built in the early British Railways years and were one of the last GWR types, still being seen in service in the early 1980s.
These long wheelbase vans were suitable for running in secondary passenger and parcels trains and were widely used for the growing express parcels business, rail services being able to provide rapid parcel transit times. Later as diesel traction took over on the Western region many Fruit D vans were used to convey spare parts for locomotives between depots for what was later named 'component exchange maintenance'.

This model painted in the BR maroon livery applied after 1957.

Avonmouth was a major grain port for many years and the GWR constructed a small fleet of grain covered hopper wagons coded GRANO to ensure a good supply of wagons would be on hand when the next grain ship docked. In addition to the regular distribution from the large dockside granary stores to the many smaller mills around the South West these wagons would be busy during the harvest season collecting grain from country granaries.

Low-sided 4-plank open wagon in the goods grey livery of the Great Western. Supplied with sawn timber load.
The GWR built some 18,000 4 plank open wagons between 1886 and 1902 on robust iron or steel frames and fitted with modern oil lubricated axleboxes before WW1 the potential life of the 4 plank wagon fleet was assessed in the 1920s. Many wagons were still in good condition with an expected life of a further 10+ years, so were equipped with brakes on both sides to comply with the latest regulations and continued in service well into the 1930s.

A new model of the GWR diagram AA20 goods train brake van, coded Toad, which was introduced in 1934.
This Rapido Trains model has been designed using works drawings and incorporates a number of different optional fittings to replicate variations between individual vehicles including different roof rain strips, different height footboards and different wheelsets. The model includes a full interior alongside a removable roof.
The requirement for brakevans on fully-fitted trains ended in 1968 but that didn’t mean the end of the ‘Toads’. Many were adopted by the engineering departments who found the plate-sided verandah ideal for transporting tools, while the cabin made an ideal mess van. A large number of GWR ‘Toads’ including several AA20s have been preserved.

The GWR traffic department made extensive use of the gangway fitted Siphon G ventilated milk vans for carrying passenger luggage, parcels and pre-sorted mail by regular passenger trains services and by the network of dedicated parcels and mail trains. In the mid 1920s a revised design of Siphon G appeared with inside body framing, the external vertical planked body now presenting a much more pleasing appearance. Vehicles to this basic style continued to be constructed into the early British Railways era, with the last being withdrawn circa 1980 having been used as newspaper sorting and packing vans, taking the daily national papers into the West of England.

The GWR ‘Bloater’ vans were built for fish traffic from 1916 onwards, to replace an ageing fleet of older designs used to transport fish. Due to the nature of the cargo, the vans were reserved solely for fish traffic and worked mainly from the major fishing ports in Cornwall and Pembrokeshire. Classed as Non-Passenger-Carrying Coaching Stock (NPCCS), the vans were through-piped for steam heating and were rated to run at express speeds with passenger trains. Three variants of the ‘Bloater’ are covered by these all-new EFE Rail models – the Diagram S8, S9 and S10. Within these diagrams could be found vans fitted with vacuum brakes and those fitted with both vacuum and Westinghouse air brakes – the latter were coded ‘Bloater A’, but by the early-1930s these had seen their air brakes removed and were recoded to ‘Bloater’.

‘Mogo’ vans were railway vans built by Great Western Railway (GWR) in order to transport motor vehicles. Each van could only take a single vehicle which was loaded by driving through doors in the end of the van. The van additionally featured side doors so that it could be used to transport normal goods if not needed as a motor transporter. 350 wagons were built by GWR with the first appearing in 1933.

Britain’s railways were developed primarily to move freight and the early railway companies employed vans of many different designs to transport goods and merchandise that required covered transport. Each railway company had its own designs, and the Great Western Railway was no different, with most of its vans utilising a 10ft wheelbase with a 12T capacity. Many of the GWR’s vans employed a wooden planked body, mounted on a metal chassis, and vacuum brakes were widely fitted; all characteristics portrayed by this Bachmann Branchline model.

With a 9ft wheelbase and 12T capacity, the wooden planked body sat on top of a metal underframe and our model reflects this, with fine detailing engraved and moulded onto the body. The chassis meanwhile incorporates brake gear and sports tie-bars between the axleboxes. Decorated to the same high standard as any Bachmann Branchline product, the model also includes a representation of the tarpaulin cover that was fitted to the wagon to protect the valuable china clay load.

A detailed model of a specially constructed van for conveying high explosives, originally gunpowder.

These vans were clearly marked to ensure that railway staff knew the contents were dangerous and precautions had to be taken in the handling of the vehicle. The bold red cross will make this wagon stand out on your layout.

The 'Iron Mink' is one of the most recognisable GWR wagon types from the end of the 19th century, with over 4,700 examples constructed between 1886 and 1901. Both underframe and body were built from iron and steel, creating a robust and long-lived wagon, with examples surviving into the 1960s. The metal construction made the design ideal for use as Gunpowder vans, wagons to the same style being used by other railway companies and private owners.
This model is finished GWR goods grey livery with 16in height lettering, as applied 1920-1936.

Several of the South Wales railway companies followed the GWR in adopting the Iron Mink for their own fleet of ventilated box vans. There were usually detail differences between the GWR wagons and those of the other operators, allowing the origins of these vans to be deduced even after the South Wales fleets were integrated with the GWRs own Iron Minks at the grouping.
This model is finished in the brown livery of the Taff Vale Railway, wagon number 5352.

In 1912 the GWR standardised the twin-bonnet pattern end for their ventilated box vans which continued until after nationalisation. The first vans with the revised end were given diagrams V14 for vans with vacuum train brakes for express goods trains and V16 for the unfitted version. 5,506 'fitted vans were built along with 2,759 unfitted before the underframe was changed to a 10-feet wheelbase in the mid-1920s. The majority of these vans remained in service at nationalisation, though their older 9-feet wheelbase chassis demoted them from express goods service.

A detailed model of the GWR diagram V16 vacuum brake fitted ventilated box van as converted to an insulated meat van. An order was issued in 1918 for the conversion of 300 vans to boost the fleet of meat vans during WW1, the diagram X6 vans having added insulation and the end bonnet vents sealed, though not removed to allow reconversion back to ventilated vans. For at least 285 of these conversions the extra insulation was retained as in 1922 these vans were further adapted as insulated and steam heated vans for banana traffic.
Model finished in GWR goods dark grey livery with 25in height lettering, as used in the pre-grouping era.

A new and highly detailed model of the RCH 1907 design open wagon. One of the most common designs used by private wagon owners these wagons frequently carried brightly coloured and floridly lettered liveries applied before WW1. Many thousands of wagons were built to this specification, the vast majority still running into WW2 and passing to British Railways at nationalisation. Each of the Rapido Trains models features prototype specific variations including end doors or no end door, buffer shank design, wheels, brake fittings and V hanger style.
Although finished in the Great Western Railway dark grey goods wagon colours this wagon is evidently on hire, carrying 'duplicate list' number 09244 to avoid confusion with the GWRs own wagon 9244 and with repair instructions on the door for the owners repair agents in Cardiff.

Model finished as GWR diagram O.33 Siphon G number 2924 in GWR chocolate brown livery.

Depicting a ‘Parto’ van, which was fitted with internal partitions to help secure loads and protect them from damage in transit, this Branchline model features an accurate bodyshell with fine plank engraving and further moulded detail.

The GWR cattle wagon changed little during the 20th century, being a much more modern design compared to the other companies cattle wagons when it was first built. The GWR design was adopted almost unaltered by British Railways as the standard cattle wagon, allowing this model of the GWR wagon to represent the BR type as well.

This model carries the GWR goods grey livery with the late 1930s small style of lettering.

Alongside general ventilated vans, Fruit Vans with additional bodyside ventilators were built to transport fruit and this Branchline model depicts one such vehicle, sporting an accurate bodyshell with fine plank engraving and further moulded detail.

A detailed model of the GWR design shock absorbing box van painted in the GWR goods dark grey livery.

Shock absorbing box vans were fitted with bodies which had some freedom of movement, controlled by springs. This helped damp out sudden shocks caused during shunting, preventing damage to the load inside the van.

The large GWR Fruit D express fruit van is returning with improved tooling. This model is painted in the GWRs' brown livery with 1934 roundel or shirtbutton logo.

These large 4-wheel vans were introduced in the late 1930's for express delivery of fresh fruit and could be conveyed by many passenger train services. Although designed as ventilated fruit vans the vents could easily be closed and the Fruit D was frequently used as a parcels and luggage van.

A highly detailed model of the RCH 1907 design 7 plank open wagon. One of the most common designs used by private wagon owners these wagons frequently carried brightly coloured and floridly lettered liveries applied before WW1. Many thousands of wagons were built to this specification, the vast majority still running into WW2 with many passing to British Railways ownership at nationalisation. Each of the Rapido Trains models features prototype specific variations including end doors or no end door, buffer shank design, wheels, brake fittings and V hanger style.
Model finished in a special mid-chrome green livery and lettered for the GWR's 'grouping era' CME Charles Coillett of Swindon, wagon 6000.

Detailed model of the GWR diagram O18 open merchandise wagons introduced in 1902 with higher 5 plank sides than used previously, cross-cornered DCIII spring applied hand brakes, self-contained buffers and 'sack truck' door. When new many were equipped with sheet supporting rails to keep tarpaulin covers from sagging, but these were removed from wagons as they were put into the 'common user' wagon pool. These wagons set the basic open wagon design used by the GWR until nationalisation and many survived as internal users into the 1970s, resulting in several examples being preserved.
This model is finished as GWR wagon number 34004 in GWR dark grey livery with pre-grouping 25in height lettering. This wagon was photographed by the GWR company photographer to record the latest new design of wagon.
