Detailed model of the GWR diagram O18 open merchandise wagons introduced in 1902 with higher 5 plank sides than used previously, cross-cornered DCIII spring applied hand brakes, self-contained buffers and 'sack truck' door. When new many were equipped with sheet supporting rails to keep tarpaulin covers from sagging, but these were removed from wagons as they were put into the 'common user' wagon pool. These wagons set the basic open wagon design used by the GWR until nationalisation and many survived as internal users into the 1970s, resulting in several examples being preserved.
This model is finished as GWR wagon number 34004 in GWR dark grey livery with pre-grouping 25in height lettering. This wagon was photographed by the GWR company photographer to record the latest new design of wagon.
