Karlsruhe suffered extensive hull damage during a deep ocean cruise in 1937 and had the hull stiffened before WW2. In 1940, she was damaged by a torpedo from HMS Truant and was scuttled by a torpedo from KMS Jaguar.

ZG3 was the British-built Greek Destroyer, Vasilefs Georgios, of 1938 which had been sunk in drydock during the invasion of Greece by German Forces. She was re-floated and refitted and served in the Mediterranean until sunk off Tunisia.

A 1/1250 scale resin model of a German dry-dock and Type VII submarine by Coastlines Models CL-D09. This dock was designed to lift U-boats out of the water for maintenance in the wet bays of armoured bunkers on sites where there was no covered slipway. This dock is based on a drawing of the dock at Noorsee III bunker Heligoland but similar docks were used elsewhere. The Nordzee III bunker model in the photograph is available separately.

When war was declared, she was requesitioned by the Kriegsmarine to act as an auxiliary fuel tanker and submarine depot ship, mostly based in the Baltic until the end of WW2 in Europe. Wilhelm Gustloff  was taken over by the Kriegsmarine after the outbreak of WW2 and from December 1940 was painted grey and used as a troopship, an accommodation ship and, finally, to evacuate troops and refugees from Baltic ports as part of Operation Hannibal. This model is cast in resin from the original Mercator master model and assembled and painted in grey overall by Coastlines Models, CL-M528B.

Anneliese Essberger is a 1/1250 scale polyurethane resin model of a German tramping ship that was taken into the Kriegsmarine in WW2 to supply and replenish U-boats at sea. By 1942, with more U-boats in service and armoured repair bunkers available to repair them in forward bases, Anneliese Essberger was withdrawn to Bordeaux and tasked to sail to Kobe, Japan with military supplies. Narvik-class Destroyers was a generic name used by the British for the large German Destroyers of WW2. This 1/1200 scale waterline kit can be built up to resemble most of the ships from Z5 to Z32 at some time during WW2. The kit is branded Fleetline but is presented in the style of Scaledown who bought the ship kits when the N-gauge model railway kits were separated in the 1980s (see photograph)

A 1/1250 scale resin model of Prinz Eugen in drydock at Brest after her Atlantic sortie with Bismarck by Coastlines Models.

When Prinz Eugen arrived in Brest in 1941, both Scharnhorst & Gneisenau were under repair in the twin graving docks. Prinz Eugen was docked in the commercial dock at right angles to the others and covered in camouflage netting except at the stern where canvas sheets were used to conceal the ship, as modelled here. The key elements of this scene, the U-boat bunker, the twin graving docks and this dock in the commercial harbour are available from Antics.
