LMS Coaches & Wagons

Era 3 coaches and wagons from the LMS. The largest of the 'big four' railway companies from 1923 to 1947 LMS routes stretched from London to Scotland via the West Coast mainline, served much of the industrial midlands region, linked with the Somerset & Dorset route at Bath, connected with Ireland via the North Wales line to Anglesey and even reached Swansea in South Wales.
Bogie well wagons were used to carry heavy or unusually tall loads. The lower floor allowed greater clearance under bridges etc. than with flat wagons. Loads were supported on the side girders using timber baulks across the wagon or over the bogies using a suitable frame to hold the load in position. All kinds of interesting loads could be carried, from boilers and  large machinery parts to maritime navigation buoys and small yachts.

The GWR iron bodied 'Iron Mink' vans made an excellent base for duties where a strong and secure wagon was required. Many vans of similar design were built by other railways and for private owners by railway wagon works. Regular uses were for flour and cement, which needed to be kept dry during transport and for the secure conveyance of explosives, classified as Gunpowder Vans. Gunpowder vans in particular were frequently given a distinct livery to alert railway staff to the hazardous cargo.
This Rapido Trains Iron Mink model is finished in the grey livery of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, wagon number 30897.

Special steel bodied box vans were constructed for the secure conveyance of explosives. These wagons were generally designated 'gunpowder van', though any explosives or military munitions might be carried. The design of these vans was regularised by the Railways Clearing House and while some variatons were built over the years this square cornered design was built by the major railway companies from the 1930s and adopted as the British Railways standard design.
Model finished in LMS grey livery with post-1934 lettering style.

One of the key drivers of industrial growth throughout the 20th century was the idea that good could be transported in standardised containers. Flat wagons provided a huge amount of versatility due to the fact that goods could be loaded into the container before being placed onto a train, and the container could be removed at the other end to continue its journey to the customer.

The most common type of Conflat wagon was the Conflat A which could carry two type A containers or a single type B container. The Conflat B wagon was able to carry wider containers such as a pair of AFP frozen food containers.

Oxford Diecast OR76WW001B OO Gauge Ministry of War Warwell 50-Ton Well Wagon ww50

A detailed model of the depressed centre Warwell wagons built during WW2 to carry tanks and other military vehicles between the factories and west coast importing ports to the embarkation ports along the south coast for shipment to France. The depressed centre well was needed to keep the vehicles inside the restricted British loading gauge, but the wagons were built with sloping end ramps and bridge plates so vehicles could be driven along the length of a train for rapid loading and unloading.
Following the invasion many of these wagons were transferred to France to keep the advancing front line supplied with replacement armoured vehicles, which would often have a low maximum road speed.

This model is finished as a wagon on loan from the War Department to the Great Western during and following the build-up to Operation Overload.

Following the improvements in production through the 20th century the standard length of rails increased from 45 feet to 60 feet. Now longer than the standard 45-feet bogie bolsters like the GWR Macaw B new 65-feet length rail carrier wagons were built.
The LMS developed bogie flat wagon, designed for use with bolsters for rail or as a flat deck wagon for track panels, was adopted as a standard type by British Railways and allocated the code name Salmon. 894 were constructed between 1949 and 1961 in 15 batches from private wagon builders as well as BR workshops. A great variety of modifications were made over the lives of these wagons, with over 400 being overhauled during the 1980s, receiving modern bogies and train air brakes. Many of these wagons were formed into continuous welded rail trains, while others were fitted with rail cranes to aid handling of jointed rails at relaying sites.
The Hornby Salmon range is a new tooling for 2023 with almost all variants of the wagon catered for. Fitted with diecast chassis, these wagons have fantastic weight that rolls freely on metal wheels. Bolsters are included in the accessory bag can be fitted to represent the different ways these wagons would have appeared.
