The ornithopter is a machine designed to fly by the flapping of its wings in imitation of birds. In 1485, Leonardo da Vinci began to study the flight of birds. He grasped that humans are too heavy, and not strong enough, to fly using wings simply attached to the arms. Therefore he sketched a device in which the aviator lies down on a plank and works two large, membranous wings using hand levers, foot pedals, and a system of pulleys.

Leonardo da Vinci had a fine grasp and understanding of engineering, demonstrated by the many machines he designed. The technology available to him may have prevented successful construction, but there is no doubt about the practicality, these machines could have been made to work.

Not just for children! Scientists and engineers study and learn from Leonardo Da Vinci even today. These kits allow machines to be recreated in 3D, bringing new insight into the ground breaking creativity of a true genius and the world of technology her foresaw.
