A highly detailed model of the 3100 class large prairie tank 2-6-2T locomotives, as rebuilt under Collett in the 1930s to match the specifications of the later 6100 class.
These engines were the original Churchward design 5100 (later 3100) class built in 1905/6 with square frames from which the later and more familiar Collett 5101 class (introduced 1929) were developed. The Churchward engines were rebuilt in 1938/9 and equipped with the higher pressure boilers of the 61xx class.

A highly detailed model of the Collet 5101 class large prairie tank 2-6-2T locomotives, a development of the earlier Chucrhward 31xx series which had proven highly effective locomotives for outer suburban services. The 5ft8in drivers of these engines allowed them to run freely at regular passenger train speeds and the growing 5101 class, 140 locomotives built between 1929 and 1949, quickly took over mainline stopping services and heavily loaded duties on many longer branch lines.

While the 5101 class large prairies were proving highly capable engines the growth of 'suburbia' in the 1930s saw demand for rapid outer suburban services steadily increase. To meet the demands of this service in 1931 Collet ordered a batch of '5101' class locomotives with boilers constructed for 225 lbs psi pressure, bringing the nominal tractive effort up to 27,340 lbs, a respectable figure for a class 5 engine! These powerful 61xx class engines, nicknamed Tanner-Ones (sixpence-penny) quickly proved to be being able to accelerate their trains very rapidly, under favourable circumstances suburban crews could catch and pass a heavy express between stops along the GWRs quadrupled Paddington to Reading line.
After nationalisation some 61xx class engines were sent to 'country' sheds where their extra power was applied to the heaviest and most difficult branch line duties.
This model of 6153 is finished in early British Railways appearance, painted black with the early lion over wheel emblem.

In 1938 another experiment was tried with a batch of 5101 class large prairie locomotives with the driving wheel diameter reduced to 5ft6in, further increasing the nominal tractive effort to 28,000lbs and improving the acceleration capabilities to bolster the 61xx class engines. In daily service the advantages proved negligible, so just 10 locomotives were constructed and these were distributed around the GWR system, often being used as banking engines, though sharing duties with standard members of the 5101 class.
This model of 8101 is finished in the later British Railways green livery with lion holding wheel crests.
