A detailed plastic kit building a signal box based on the box at Highley on the Severn Valley Railway. Appearing quite typical of GWR signal boxes with a brick base and wooden top this particular box was supplied by signalling contractors Mackenzie & Holland, their design 'type 3', making this kit ideal for freelance layouts set anywhere in the country.

A common feature of country stations large and small, whilst market town cattle docks could be very large indeed. Our model is of the one at Yeovil Pen Mill (GWR) Station, Somerset. Livestock (Modelscene Cows Ref. 5100, Sheep and Lambs Ref. 5110, Pigs Ref. 5108, and Horses Ref.5105) was conveyed on British railways until around 1973, although many cattle docks remained in place unused, becoming overgrown - an interesting scenic feature. Detailed model kit to build a small platform or ground mounted signal box.
Small signal boxes like this one were built at many minor branchline stations where traffic did not require a larger 'box to manage the basic arrangements of passing loop and siding. This size would also be suitable a level crossing box with signals operated by the crossing keeper to warn approaching trains.

Large capacity square water tank on brick building. Based on a water tank at Taunton these tanks were often installed at large depots and stations to ensure consistant water supply. The building below could be used as a stores, or to accomodate a pump.

Quick to build from pre-cast concrete sections these goods stores were put up in station yards to provide increased covered storage capacity. Many were let to traders and a few can still be found today.

This kit is a little more complex than many other Ratio buildings, needing care to assemble all of the correct parts to the correct panels. Just like the prototypes there are several possible floorplans, larger buildings needing the parts of a second kit.

Ridge roofed platform canopy, designed for use as an island platform canopy (tracks both sides) but can easily be adapted for side platforms. Kit includes glazed roof sections and kits can be joined to build larger structures.

The Southern Railway produced pre-cast concrete huts after WW2 to replace wooden huts in many locations; these were used by platelayers to store tools and for shelter. Glue and paints required to complete model. Kit includes parts for 2 huts: Footprint: 50mm x 38mm each

Many goods yards had weigh bridges so that the 'carriage price' of a load to be carried by rail could be costed. Goods were then loaded into the goods shed. In the days when everything came by rail, even the smallest goods yard would provide a facility for the local coal merchant next to a siding. A very useful set of oil storage tanks. Designed for use with oil depot kit 529, these have many other uses like fuel storage for diesel locomotive depots.

Water towers with cranes were generally used on platforms and in other areas with restricted space.

The essential items for all stations until recently was a goods shed. Inside, dry goods were stored and transhipped from road to rail via the internal platform. The shed usually had a crane (Ref 531) or hoist (Ref 543) inside, whilst pallets and sacks (Ref 514) would be seen stacked around the site. A good example of this type of goods shed can still be seen standing in Ross on Wye, long after the railway has disappeared. This kit is modelled on the Midland Railway standard 4d box with characteristic hipped roof, and is based on the prototype at Swadlincote Junction, Leics. This timeless design lasted right up to the demise of mechanical signalling. The Ratio Signal Box Interior kit 553 will provide a wealth of interior detail. Often seen supporting railway cuttings and embankments in urban areas where there is insufficient space for earth slopes. Make cuttings, yard walls or raised railway viaducts with these versatile sections. The kit comprises a coaling stage, water tower with crane, and a hoist for loading the coal. This model and the Engine Shed kit (Ref 522) make a good starting point for any layout in need of steam engine facilities. The Pecoscene Real Coal range (PS-330 -332) provides the perfect addition, as do the Pecoscene Ash and Cinder Scatter Materials (PS-320 - 322). From the late 1960's the spread of shipping containers revolutionised the transport of goods. On the railways marshalling yards gave way to intermodal depots as containers are transferred between ships, trains and road vehicles. The Rolling Underframe kit (Ref 546A) can be added to transform this unit into a movable crane. These towers are an impressive sight and were an essential feature on mainline railways. With its fine scale latticework and curved section roof, this typical footbridge will add interest and a sense of importance to any model station.The versatile kit design means that the stairs can be assembled to face in either direction or straight off the end of the bridge. Additional kits can be used to create multiple spans, whilst larger, busier stations often had 2 stairways to each platform, leading off in both directions. Could also be used without the roof sections at a large terminus under an overall station canopy. To fit under the Ratio Locomotive Lifting Hoist (545) or Overhead Traversing Crane (546) to allow them to run along tracks (not included). The kit makes a pair of rolling underframes. Length 61mm.

A well designed model kit to build a model of a brick-built GWR signal box. This was a standard GWR design and a huge number were built all over the system. Despite rationalisation over the years there are still many to be seen today, with a number still in operation on heritage railways. The model is based on the medium sized box at Buckfastleigh on the South Devon Railway, a quite small country station with loops and goods sidings.
This model will be perfect for a country stations and branchline junctions, but can easily be altered. The GWR built these signal boxes on a modular basis, so the kit can easily be shortened (by removing the central window unit and one of the adjacent frame uprights) to create a box for a small station. Similarly kits can be combined and/or used with some embossed plastic sheet to add window frame units to recreate a large box suitable for a mainline station.

Features include the finely moulded GWR signal box window frames, steps and typical GWR-style slate roof. Moulded in the correct colours, painting is optional but good results can be obtained by carefully painting, especially as the GWR often used engineers blue bricks for corners and foundation courses. Running a wash of cream/grey paint over the wall then wiping off the brick surfaces to leave the lighter colour in the grooves also nicely recreates the appearance of the mortar between the bricks.

Adds the finishing touches to any signal box (See Ratio 500, 503, 536, 552 and Wills SS48 kits); it contains all you need to fit out a typical signal box including a 20-lever frame and a level crossing operating wheel. Glue and paints required to complete model.

These specially reinforced ARP (Air Raid Precautions) signal boxes featured substantial construction, primarily to protect the locking room gear from bomb blasts during air raids in World War II. A number of similar signal box designs were still to be found around the rail network until quite recently, due to them being difficult to demolish!
Based on the LMS-designed example at Town Green, Ormskirk the Ratio kit faithfully replicates the prototype and builds into a sturdy, if not bombproof, model. All moulded parts are produced to a high standard and in base colours. Kit requires painting and light weathering to create the model pictured above.

Originally a war time structure, many of these have survived and found to have many different uses. The kit will make up 2 full length (approx 170mm long and 75mm wide) huts; however, the supplied internal bracings are also detailed as ends so it is also possible to make up 4 shorter (85mm long x 75mm wide) huts if required. A detailed plastic kit modelled on the stone-built station building at Castle Cary, Somerset. The local stone construction allows the structure to easily be relocated to anywhere in Britain by adjusting the finish painting to match the colours used by the appropriate railway company. This structure incorporates all of the facilities needed at a country station and the kit is completed with optional notice/poster boards, telephone and first aid boxes.

Many merchants had private sidings where they could be supplied directly by rail. This kit includes office, loading platform, coal scales, hoist and 2 lamps and can be constructed in a number of ways. These were a common feature in sidings where repairs, cleaning and maintenance were effected. This shed will cover 2 tracks and can easily be extended; the kit includes guttering and centre walkway.
