Initially, Imperator suffered stability problems and developed a list which was apparent to all who saw her in harbour. A dockyard refit was necessary to correct the list. The ostentatious figurehead (which was said to have been added to the ship when it was discovered that the RMS Aquitania would be longer than the Imperator) was damaged and part of it was lost in a North Atlantic storm before WW1. Thereafter only the golden scrollwork remained on the bow.
At the end of WW1, she went to Cunard as Berengaria and served longer on the Atlantic than all her sisterships. Damaged by fire, she was returned to Britain in 1937 and scrapped in stages at various shipyards ending up at Rosyth in 1946.
