Empress of Scotland was built in 1922 for the Canadian Pacific line and originally named Empress of Japan. For many years, she was the largest passenger line in the Pacific Ocean. When Japan entered WW2 on the side of the Axis powers, she was re-named and after troopship duties, she returned to service with Canadian Pacificwithout reverting to her old name. Once the three new Empress of Britain class ships entered service in the 1950s, the old lady was sold to Germany and was extensively updated with a two funnel design and a new name, "Hanseatic". Unfortunately, she caught fire after only a short time and although she was again repaired but thereafter the smell of the fire was always present and she was withdrawn and scrapped.
