Torpedo bombers in the Japanese initial attack wave divided into two groups to attack ships moored on both sides of Ford Island. Utah was unfortunate to be the largest target to the west and fell victim to several torpedo hits and capsized, whereas the cruisers Raleigh & Detroit moored ahead of Utah received fewer hits and survived. Utah came to rest with her superstructure resting on the bottom in the position modelled. In an epic salvage effort, Utah was righted using the same methods that were employed with Costa Concordia but she was scrapped to the waterline in situ and parts of the wreck are still visible in the harbour today.
