The traditional use of brake composite coaches was coming to an end in the later British railways period as services were rationalised and no-longer limited to regional boundaries. Brake composite coaches were still favoured as spare coaches and for more lightly used services as demand for first class accommodation began to decline. LNER coaches remained in service through the 1960s as they featured the Pullman gangways and 'buckeye' knuckle couplers compatible with the new BR standard Mark 1 coaches.
