After WW2 the increasing traffic in new motor cars required the use of larger wagons conveying more than one car at a time and British Railways catered for smaller volume traffic using new CCT and GUV vans with folding end doors, allowing road vehicles to be driven through into the next van in the train. However the MOGOs found an interesting traffic niche. Many MOGOs were allocated for the Metal Box Company traffic flows, as the company's plant at Carlisle loaded wagons through the end doors while many of the depots had only side loading docks.
