The Derby class 108 units were a later design, incorporating the experience gained from the early 'lightweight' and later 'heavyweight' DMU designs to provide a tough, long-lived carriage with robust mechanicals below. These smart looking units were among the last 'first generation' DMUs to be retained in BR service.

Eras 5-6. DCC and Sound Ready. 6 pin decoder required for DCC operation. Sound decoder and speaker required for sound fitting. Directional lighting. NEM plug-in couplers. Length 275mm.

Introduced in the 1950's these DMU's replaced steam passenger trains on branch lines and local services across the country. The ability to couple these trains together to form longer trains when needed with just one driver and guard made these units very flexible in service. The last units of this type were still in passenger service in 2000 and several sets have been preserved.
