The 153 units are the usual trains on many of the scenic but lightly-used cross-country branchlines in Wales. Many of these services are essential, providing public transport connections to many towns and tourist destinations in remote parts of the principality. Units can easily be coupled together, or coupled to other 'sprinter' types to form longer trains wehn required, making the 153 a particularly flexible and useful part of the Arriva roster.

The Derby class 108 units were a later design, incorporating the experience gained from the early 'lightweight' and later 'heavyweight' DMU designs to provide a tough, long-lived carriage with robust mechanicals below.
