Diesel Multiple Units

From GWR streamline railcars to HST and Voyager Trains

The 153 units are the usual trains on many of the scenic but lightly-used cross-country branchlines in Wales. Many of these services are essential, providing public transport connections to many towns and tourist destinations in remote parts of the principality. Units can easily be coupled together, or coupled to other 'sprinter' types to form longer trains wehn required, making the 153 a particularly flexible and useful part of the Arriva roster.

This Dapol model features a low friction under window drive mechanism, as developed for the 156 Sprinter unit, incorporating the Dapol super creep motor and a 40:1 gear ratio for superb smooth running at low speeds. A DCC 6 pin socket will be fitted along with directional lighting and see through windows.

This model will carry the Arriva Trains aqua blue livery. Arriva operate several franchises, including many scenic routes in Wales where the 153 provides passenger train services linking remote communities.

The pinnacle of N scale second generation DMUs, the Graham Farish Class 158 combines high fidelity bodyshells with an underframe that’s adorned with separate components depicting the engines, electrical equipment, and auxiliary gear. It’s the livery application which really brings these models to life and every element has been replicated in miniature. Whilst the main colours are spray painted, the myriad smaller logos, symbols and lettering are applied using a specialist printing process, using BR and corporate specification fonts, logos and colours.

These smart looking units were among the last 'first generation' DMUs to be retained in BR service.

This section contains the expanding range of diesel unit trains, with Bachmann producing several classes of the short-frame low density sets used on branchlines and secondary routes, plus the modern 'Turbostar' generation units, while Dapol are concentrating on the suburban type units.
The few models of electric units, the Hornby/Arnold Brighton Belle and Bachmann/Graham Farish Desiro units, have been placed with the electric locomotives.

Railcars and unit trains are now the principal types of trains in use on Britains Railways. The first successful diesel trains were the GWRs' streamlined railcars. British Rail built Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) to take over from steam locomotives on branchline and suburban passenger trains in the 1950s and 60s.
Today Intercity 125 High Speed Trains (HST) and Voyagers form the backbone of poer on the British passenger rail network.
