A growth in demand in the heavy haulage sector led to a review of BR’s available motive power in the 1980s. With 185 locomotives of the Type 5, 3,000+ horsepower category available, made up of its Classes 56 and 58, it was clear that more would be needed, and BR put out an invitation to tender for new locomotives in 1987. The 100 locomotive order was awarded to Brush in Loughborough, and these entered service between 1989 and 1993. No.60038 was named ‘Bidean nam Bian’ after the Scottish ‘Munro’ in Glen Coe. With BR’s trainload freight business broken up into shadow franchises, the locomotive became part of Loadhaul, based in the north-east. By 1996, this had become part of EWS and 60038 was named 'Avesta Polarit' after the steel making company at the DFDS Immingham sea terminal on 19th March 2002. It is now one of 14 owned by DC Rail and currently in store.
