New model of the LMS standard wood construction 5 plank open general merchandise wagons to diagram 1666. Developed from the Midland Railway designs updated to the 1923 RCH wagon specifications an entire assembly line was put together to build these wagons, with 54,450 completed between 1923 and 1930. For perspective, this one wagon design was more numerous than the entire Southern Railway wagon fleet, making this one of the most common open merchandise wagons on the British railway network by the 1930s. The vast majority of these wagons would still have been in service at nationalisation and would have been is use until substantial numbers of newer BR standard design wagons were available to begin replacing them in the late 1950s.
