Dapol HAA, HEA & HIA hoppers

Air braked coal & aggregate hopper wagons. Modernisation started with the HAA bulk coal hoppers and 'merry-go-round' operation between collieries and power stations. British Rail adopted the air train brake system for this new fleet of high capacity wagons in captive service. The HBA design followed, intended to replace the vacuum braked hopper wagons in domestic coal service to coal concentration depots. These new wagons were also intended to run at higher speeds, reducing transit times. Although suitable for 45mph further modernisation of the suspension was needed for future faster freight service, leading to the HEA with suspension suitable for 60mph Speedlink services.
Dapol have now added the 102tonne glw bogie hoppers used by Freightliner for aggregate service, ideal for use with the new class 66 diesels.
A detailed model of the BR HEA type air braked coal hopper wagons intended to replace the 1950s 21 ton hopper wagons in domestic and industrial coal distribution service. Serving smaller consumers HEA wagons would often be delivered by Air Brake Network and Speedlink Distribution train services mixed in with the open wagons, vans and ferry wagons.
Model finished in BR Railfreight red and grey livery.

Model of BR HAA merry-go-round MGR coal hopper wagon wagon 351131 with red painted hopper framing and top canopy.
HAA hoppers were produced for the mass transport of coal from colliery to power station in a non stop loop known as `Merry Go Round Operation’, this led to the wagon being known as MGR wagons. Over 11,000 of these 32T hoppers were manufactured for BR mainly at Shildon between 1964 and 1965.
To reduce dust from the coal being blown from the tops of these hoppers on some routes a number of wagons were fitted with top canopies. Dapol have produced a new tooling to model this modification.
