London Transport had retained a small number of ex-Metropolitan Railway steam locomotives for engineering service and by 1950 these engines were at the end of their service lives. The original design GWR 57xx pannier tanks were one of the few types which would fit within the Metropolitan loading gauge and LT purchased 11 from BR. Painted in Metropolitan lined red these engines worked for LT until 1971.
This model is finished as LT L90, though as number L90 was used twice, 7711 being replaced with 7760 in 1961 we await a photo from Dapol to confirm which one!

The Collett 5700 class was introduced in 1929, a general updating of the GWR's previous pannier tank designs of the 1854 & 2721 classes dating from 1890-1900 that had proven highly successful. These 30+ year-old engines were now becoming life expired and needing new engines delivered quickly 57xx panniers were ordered from North British Loco Co, W Bagnall, Kerr Stuart, Yorkshire Engine Co and Armstrong Whitworth in addition to being built at Swindon.
The '8750' class followed in 1933, using the same base chassis and boiler with some design refinements, notably the modern looking curved cab roof. GWR top feed apparatus was added to new boilers from 1942 and no doubt to older boilers if internal repairs were required.
By 1950 863 locomotives had been constructed, forming one of the largest locomotive classes in Britain. With so many builders and GWR standardisation, allowing major parts to be switched between engines, many variations appeared over the years. Though cab styling remained as built many early build locomotives acquired boilers with top feeds, while later built engines were carrying older boilers without top feed when withdrawn. Tank changes were more unusual, but at least one North British built locomotive originally fitted with welded tanks was later fitted with riveted tanks from a W Bagnall or Kerr Stuart built engine.

The GWR placed the new 57xx class in power class C, equating to BR classification 3 with a blue route restriction, later reduced to yellow, giving the engines almost universal route clearance. Having been developed from older engines the 57xx class was expected to undertake all kinds of local passenger and goods duties on main and branch lines in addition to their shunting role, so, except for the 'shunting only' 67xx engines all were equipped with vacuum train brakes and steam heating connections. The engines were to be found all over the GWR/BR Western Region and in BR days several were sent to the Southern region and the Midland/S&D shed at Bath to replace older engines.
