The Southern Railways' standard brake van design did not emerge until 1928 using the heavy underframe from the SE&CR design van fitted with a very short central cabin body, quickly earning the nickname of 'pill boxes'.  Most importantly though the vans did have a reputation for good riding and having a good brake.
Model finished in British Railways goods grey livery.
The Southern vans seem to have stayed little from former SR routes even under British Railways ownership, though the type is an ideal companion for Dapols' Terrier locomotives and an excellent alternative to the similar BR standard design vans to add variety to goods trains.

This model represents one of these later vans which continued to be built into 1948 finished in the later SR brown livery with red ends and small size lettering.

An ideal companion for Dapols' Terrier locomotives and an excellent alternative to the similar BR standard design vans to add variety to goods trains.

An ideal companion for Dapols' Terrier locomotives and an excellent alternative to the similar BR standard design brake vans. These ex-Southern vans moved around more under British Railways ownership, with several appearing in the North East area where their extra weight was no doubt appreciated when controlling heavy coal trains.
