Slaters 7028 0 Gauge Midland Railway 8-ton 5 Plank Open Wagon With Side and End Doors

Plastic kit of the 8-ton Midland Railway 5 plank open wagon with end door.
End door wagons were used for mineral traffic which could easily be tipped out by upending the wagon, but railway-owned 5 plank wagons would also have been used in general merchandise service. Side doors were provided to allow for manual unloading on minerals to the side of the wagon and the handling of other loads in crates or barrels.

One of the classic Slaters MR kits, open wagons formed the backbone of the railway wagon fleet, with goods being covered with a tarpaulin when weather protection was needed.

The vehicle represented by our kit was built between 1905 and 1910 and is the later version of the Midland Railway cattle wagon, superseding an earlier but similar type which had an extra plank on the side and only one guardrail. Some vehicles had guardrails taken through the actual frame of the sides, while others had their rails simply bolted on to the outside of the frame. Some wagons of this type lasted into B.R. days, and the L.M.S. at one time converted some for use for ale traffic.

A total of 420 of these wagons were built by the MR and the design formed the basis for the standard L.M.S. cattle wagon.
Photographic evidence shows that when built, brake gear was fitted to one side only with a single V-hanger. Later was the addition of a second V-hanger and brakes on both sides. Some were fitted with screw link couplings and vacuum brakes.

A model kit to build one of the Midland Railways' well known single verandah brake vans.
The kit builds a model of the early wood construction, wood underframe 10-ton type with a style familiar right to the end of steam. A considerable number of these vans were still in service at the grouping and a small number survived into British Railways ownership, though often with the engineering departments.
After 20-ton brake vans were built the Midland sold some of these 10-ton vans to other railways, particularly light railways and larger industrial operators. Examples passed into the ownership of the Southern (Isle of Wight Central) and Great Western (Brecon & Merthyr) at grouping.
These sales make the Midland brake van very useful to modellers building a 'freelance' layout to suit the space available. The small size is a bonus for small layouts, shunting the van onto the rear of a train can cause hours of extra puzzling.

A beer van is an ideal subject for modellers! These wagons with slatted sides were used to distribute beer from Burton on Trent, returning with empty kegs.
The LMS built 100 of these vans with slat sides and ends in 1929 and many lasted until the run-down of beer carriage on the railways during the 1960s. Transfers for LMS and BR liveries supplied with the kit.
Supplied with metal wheels and 3 link couplings.

Following the all-steel bodied vans the LMS returned to wood for the sides but retained the corrugated steel end panels which stood up well if the load shifted lengthwise during shunting. The LMS built 3,450 of these at Wolverton Works in 1929 – 1931. Lasted into the early 1960s. Transfers for LMS and BR.

Kit to build a model of one of the LMS steel bodied ventilated box vans built to diagram D1828.
These wagons were a serious attempt to construct a strong and robust box van with 1,000 built in 1929 and 1930 by several builders. There were numerous detail differences and the kit is based on a batch of 150 built by Charles Roberts. The steel body vans lasted well into the BR era, with a number being preserved.
Supplied with metal wheels and 3 link couplings.

The LMS constructed 1000 of these vans specially equipped with steam heating and controllable end ventilators between 1925 and 1930 to carry bananas from ports such as Avonmouth, Garston and London, to inland warehouses. The majority of the type remained in service into the 1960s and the first batches of British Railways banana vans used this same basic design. This kit provides a useful addition to the Southern design banana van, kit PS100, particularly for the British Railways era.
Supplied with metal wheels and 3 link couplings.

Parkside plastic model kit for the LMS/LNER/BR 21-ton Double Bolster Wagon.
Developed from the LNER plate wagon design these 21-ton capacity double bolster wagon were built for both the LNER and LMS. Later the design was adopted by British Railways as a standard type and around 2,400 were built in total. The last examples of these wagons were withdrawn in the 1970s, replaced by the new air braked wagon fleet. The kit is supplied with a pipe load, however the wagons carried a wide range of long loads including timber (planks) and lengths of structural metal sections. Two could be run together or with a low-sided runner wagon to convey loads longer than a single wagon.
Supplied with transfers for LMS, LNER and BR 1950s-1970s.

Following the steady growth of goods trains towards the end of the 19th century the heavier trans required a similar improvement ion the brake force available to the crew. Showing a definite Midland Railway family resemblance to the 4 wheel 10 ton brake vans this kit builds a a model of the heavier 6-wheeled 20 ton vans used on the heaviest coal trains.

The Railways Clearing House produced an updated set of wagon designs in 1923, modernising the wagon fittings to include now oil lubricated axle boxes. Widely adopted as the 'standard wagon' for private owners the 7 plank open wagon was selected by the LMS and LNER as their standard type for mineral traffic. Wagons to this design were also owned by the SR for mineral traffic around the Kent coal field and leased by GWR when additional capacity was needed In addition many private owners names appeared on the sides of these wagons, making this one of the most useful wagon kits in the Parkside range.
