Small industrial locomotives like this have been used by companies with large amounts to move for as long as railways have existed. Their small size means that they can traverse smaller radius corners, enter factories, and require less infrastructure to maintain. Often they would be used to shunt goods, preparing them to be collected by another locomotive which would then take them further afield.

In 2007 newly formed Colas Rail unveiled four newly liveried Class 47 locomotives, having previously relied on hired Class 57s to fulfil its timber hauling contracts. This was early evidence of the ambition Colas Rail had to obtain and grow its own fleet of freight locomotives. The first two locomotives to be overhauled ready for service were No. 47727 ‘Rebecca’ and No. 47749 ‘Demelza’. In April 2016 locomotive No. 47749 had its original name 'City of Truro' restored.

After privatisation of the British railway network, the preserved Deltics became ideal candidates for mainline running due to their strong performance characteristics relative to other preserved diesels. This has included running passenger charters as well as freight services. On 29 November 2017 it was announced via the official Royal Scots Grey website that 55 022 ‘Royal Scots Grey’ and D9016 ‘Gordon Highlander’, plus all spares, had been sold to Locomotive Services Limited, with D9016 recently moving to LSL’s facility in Margate.

Model of BR locomotive 47803 finished in BR infrastructure livery.
During the mid-s980s British Rail allocated locomotives to business sectors and 47803 was assigned to the infrastructure sector, serving the engineering departments and at that time installing new high speed high capacity communications networks along Britains major rail routes. The capacity of these networks could then be sold to commercial telecommunications service providers.
Being primarily for engineering service 47803 was painted in the high-visibility engineering yellow livery.

Starting out life as D6744, the locomotive would be renumbered twice, both times under the TOPS system. Initially 37044 the locomotive would become 37710. The locomotive would serve with BR Railfreight before being transferred to Loadhaul. Stored for many years in a heavy state of disrepair as a parts donor, the locomotive is currently owned by West Coast Railways although it still wears the Loadhaul livery.

This Railroad model fitted with a 3 pole motor and simple gearing, proving to be a reliable runner on any layout. The 8 pin DCC socket allows the model to be used on a digital layout where required and its railroad specification makes it ideal as a starter model.

Introduced to service as D212 in May 1959 and the third of the production series to be delivered, 'Aureol' was officially named in 1960. By 1974 when the locomotive was re-numbered 40012 under TOPS the locomotive's nameplates had been removed, yet despite this the locomotive's name was painted onto the bodyside before 1985 withdrawal. Reinstated in 1985 to assist with the remodeling of Crewe Station, restricted to a top speed of 35mph, and given the departmental number 97407.
This extension to the service life of number 40012 resulted in the locomotive being purchased for preservation.

British Railways originally ordered ten Class 40s, then known as "English Electric Type 4s", as evaluation prototypes. They were to be used as replacements for steam locomotives, usually hauling passenger services. The prototypes were successful enough to warrant a further 190 production models. It was initially worried that the locomotives lacked the power needed to maintain the speeds required on express services and as a result the capability to run in multiple was considered a main design feature. This resulted in the inclusion of small gangways at each end of the first 145 units. After this point it was realised that multiple running was rare and could be achieved without the gangways. The first 125 units were built with a disk route identification. When unfolded the disks were white with a small hole to allow a light to shine through during the night. When the top half of the disk was folded down the back was painted so as to blend into the locomotive and make it clear the disk was not in use. A few locomotives forwent the disks and simply relied on lights or the more traditional lamps, lamp irons having remained a feature. The disk system was soon abandoned in favour of the more modern headcode system, initially requiring split headcodes to accommodate the gangway doors. Once the gangway doors were abandoned the split headcode boxes were combined in a central position where the gangway doors had previously been. The arrival of more powerful locomotives such as the class 47, 50 and 55 along with the electrification of the WCML made the Class 40s redundant, relegating them to freight duties for which they were not well suited. Withdrawals began in 1976 with the majority of locomotives being withdrawn in the early 1980s. Locomotive D232 was built in 1959 and entered service in September that year. The locomotive was named 'Empress of Canada' in March 1961, named after the vessel operated by Canadian Pacific Steamships. Under the TOPS numbering system, the locomotive became 40032 in late 1973. The locomotive was withdrawn in February 1982 and scrapped at Swindon Locomotive Works.

The British Rail Class 47 or Brush Type 4 is a class of diesel-electric locomotive that was developed in the 1960s by Brush Traction. A total of 512 Class 47s were built at Brush's Falcon Works in Loughborough and at British Railways' Crewe Works between 1962 and 1968, which made them the most numerous class of British mainline diesel locomotive. They were fitted with the Sulzer 12LDA28C twin-bank twelve-cylinder unit producing 2,750 bhp (2,050 kW) – though this was later derated to 2,580 bhp (1,920 kW) to improve reliability – and have been used on both passenger and freight trains on Britain's railways for over 55 years. Despite the introduction of more modern types of traction, a significant number are still in use, both on the mainline and on heritage railways. As of January 2020, 78 locomotives still exist as Class 47s, with further examples having been converted to other classes; 32 Class 47s have been preserved, and 34 retain "operational status" on the mainline.

The British Rail Class 37 is a diesel-electric locomotive. Also known as the English Electric Type 3, and by some railway enthusiasts as 'tractors' due to their agricultural sound, the class was ordered as part of the British Rail modernisation plan. They were numbered in two series, D6600–D6608 and D6700–D6999. The Class 37 became a familiar sight on many parts of the British Rail network, in particular forming the main motive power for InterCity services in East Anglia and within Scotland. They also performed well on secondary and inter-regional services for many years. The class was designed for both passenger and freight work. Many of the original locomotives were fitted with boilers for steam heating. With the withdrawal of many Type 2 and Type 3 locomotives in the 1980s the 37s were selected as the standard Type 3 and many of the fleet were given a heavy overhaul to prolong their life into the 1990s and beyond. Some were fitted with electrical train heating (ETH) equipment in the 1980s to become the 37/4 sub-class, initially for use on the West Highland Line, the Welsh Marches line and South Wales - Bristol area services and Far North Lines but later seeing use in north/mid Wales and occasionally the West Country. In 2010, they were used on passenger services on the Cumbrian Coast line and Wherry lines. Class 37 locomotives have proved to be very popular, with many examples saved for preservation on heritage railways as well by enthusiast groups. A staple of the Hornby line, who produced the first version of the BR Class 37 in Dublo back in 1965.

Locomotive number 20 was delivered to the SDJR straight from the manufacturer, Bagnall, in 1928. When it entered the LMS pool of Jintys it would be renumbered 7151. Shortly after this, during a renumbering scheme it would be renumbered again to 7311. The locomotive would enter War Department service before being returned to its standard service, although now with BR as 47311. The locomotive would spend much of its BR life stationed in London before being withdrawn from the Stratford shed in 1960, being scrapped shortly after.

The Hornby Jinty is fitted with a 3 pole motor and simple gearing, proving to be a reliable runner on any layout. The 6 pin DCC socket allows the model to be used on a digital layout if required and its railroad specification make it ideal as a starter model.

Let It Be' was the final studio album of The Beatles, released in May 1970 after the group's breakup. The creation of the album was documented in the concurrently released documentary of the same name which included clips of song rehearsals and the Apple Corps rooftop concert, the unannounced live performance which would be the groups last.

Despite being the group's last, the album features some of The Beatles' most famous songs including 'Across the Universe', 'Let It Be', 'The Long and Winding Road' and 'Get Back', demonstrating that the group's music continued to remain immensely relevant to the popular music scene until the end.

This commemorative wagon features a special livery inspired by the 'Let It Be' album artwork.

The Class 59 is a Co-Co diesel-electric locomotive built by Electro-Motive Diesel in La Grange, Illinois for British customers. A tender for six locomotives was created by Foster Yeoman, operator of Torr Works, for a powerful locomotive with 95% availability. Although Brush Traction and BREL of Britain were invited to come up with a design, only EMD could be the 95% availability criteria. EMD’s tender was sufficiently adept at the work required that double heading would no longer be needed, resulting in the order being reduced to just 4.

The locomotives were delivered to the UK via Southampton in January 1986 becoming the first privately owned locomotives to regularly operate on Britain’s mainline and the first designed and built in the US. After the initial 4 locomotives were proven successful, the Amalgamated Roadstone Corporation (ARC) ordered another 4 which were built by General Motors Diesel Division at their Canadian plant in London, Ontario in 1990. A final order of six locomotives was placed by National Power which were again built in Ontario in 1994 and 1995. The hugely successful EMD Class 66 is partially a development of the Class 59 and shares many components including its bodywork. Locomotive No. 59101 was one of the 4 ARC locomotives to be built in Canada. The locomotive arrived in Britain in October 1990 and entered service the following month. By the time the locomotive had arrived ARC had been purchased by Hanson PLC and as a result over the next few years all four of the ARC order locomotives were repainted into the blue and white Hanson livery.

In 1990 a group of like-minded people came together in the belief that they could construct from new, a Peppercorn Class A1 Pacific locomotive. The first steam locomotive built in the United Kingdom since 'Evening Star' in 1960 and it would be built to meet modern safety and certification standards to enable it to run on mainline connected heritage railways. After a period of nearly 20 years the dream became a reality on the 29th July 2008 when locomotive No. 60163 'Tornado' moved under its own power at Darlington.

A tippler wagon is a unique type of wagon on British Railways. While many different variations on the concept exists the core functionality is the same. Loading and unloading wagons is often the most time consuming part of rail freight and to get around this the tippler wagon was designed to be unloaded via the inverting of the entire wagon on an enormous unloading jig.

The bogie tippler wagon has been employed by a number of companies including BR and Cappagh civil engineering. The first batch was built by BREL with further examples being build by Redpath Dorman Long between 1972 and 1977. Initially designed for hauling iron ore, in the modern era they can also be seen hauling quarry products and steel.
