The modular design of the British Railways mark 1 coach allowed for a range of variations to be constructed from a standardised set of side panels. The first corridor coach comprised 7 compartments with a large lavatory compartment at each end and door vestibules at the extreme ends of the coach. On the corridor side use of the narrower panels allowed an extra door to be fitted in near-central position.
Use of the narrower panels for the entire coach provided for the 8 narrower compartments or seating bays of the second class coaches.
