This Bachmann Branchline model depicts a wagon with a pressed steel end door and side doors which have top flaps – this aided manual unloading in coal yards. Bottom discharge doors are also present whilst this wagon sports double sided brakes and is fitted with 3-hole disc wheels which are of metal construction. The unmistakable look of the 16T Mineral Wagon is expertly replicated, with this Branchline model boasting separately fitted metal door stops, brake gear, linkage and hand brake levers, along with metal buffer heads and cosmetic coupling hooks. A detailed model of the later Ministry of Transport 16-ton open mineral wagon painted in the MoT brown colours.

These wagons were built during the later part of WW2, production continuing until around 1950. The wagons were ordered due to the steady deterioration of the elderly wooden wagon fleet under wartime conditions.

BR midland region numbered wagon.

The Southern Railway built batches of their standard box vans with the distinctive alternating broad and narrow planks for all of the major railway companies during WW2. These vans passed to BR in 1948, carrying regional numbers appropriate to their previous owners.

A good model of these steel bodied vans which were specially built and fitted with secure doors for the transport of explosives.

Originally this was principally gunpowder and frequently used to transport explosives for mines and quarries, this name was retained for use on these vans long after other explosives were developed. During peacetime the cargoes included all kinds of explosives and potentially explosive material, plus ammunition deliveries for reserve and cadet units across Britain.

GWR orders for the Fruit D express fruit van were still being delivered into the 1950s. These useful vans were widely used for express parcels the growing small consignments business.
Many of these relatively new vans were still in service when the change to blue livery occured in the late 1960s/ early 1970s, the last examples surviving in service until about 1980, often travelling widely in parcels service.
This model painted in rail blue is ideal for the 1970s era, the twilight years of the Western regions' diesel hydraulic locomotive fleet, when many of these vans were used to transport spare parts from Swindon works to locomotive depots.

Model of a British Railways standard design bulk grain hopper from the 1950's. These wagons were a continuation of the steel-bodied bulk grain wagons introduced by the LMS in the 1930s. BR built a substantial fleet of these grain wagons as grain processing had become more concentrated in fewer, larger mills during and following WW2 and moving grain in bulk hopper wagons was far more efficient than sacks in box vans.

This Rapido Trains model has been designed using works drawings and incorporates a number of different optional fittings to replicate variations between individual vehicles including different roof rain strips, different height footboards and different wheelsets. The model includes a full interior alongside a removable roof.
The requirement for brakevans on fully-fitted trains ended in 1968 but that didn’t mean the end of the ‘Toads’. Many were adopted by the engineering departments who found the plate-sided verandah ideal for transporting tools, while the cabin made an ideal mess van. A large number of GWR ‘Toads’ including several AA20s have been preserved.

Rapido Trains have chosen to model the late LNER design of LOWMAC low machinery wagon, a design which was built in large numbers for the type for both the LNER and LMS during WW2 and later adopted by British Railways as a standard design. Equipped with vacuum train brakes these LOWMACs were among the very few 'special' wagon types which could run in fast goods trains.
The Rapido Trains model features fine detailing including the lashing rings used to secure the load and brake rigging arranged to allow a NEM coupler pocket to be fitted.

These distinctive vans were heavily influenced by Midland Railway practice, as adapted to the more flexible dual-veranda design introduced in 1910. The SECR built 50 new vans to this design and 25 older single-veranda vans were rebuilt, with detail differences between the original and new ends. Both types have been tooled. Examples survived into British Railways ownership, with at least 1 survivor on the Kent & East Sussex Railway.

In 1912 the GWR standardised the twin-bonnet pattern end for their ventilated box vans which continued until after nationalisation. The first vans with the revised end were given diagrams V14 for vans with vacuum train brakes for express goods trains and V16 for the unfitted version. 5,506 'fitted vans were built along with 2,759 unfitted before the underframe was changed to a 10-feet wheelbase in the mid-1920s. The majority of these vans remained in service at nationalisation, though their older 9-feet wheelbase chassis demoted them from express goods service.

In May 1918 an order was issued to convert 300 GWR diagram V16 vacuum brake fitted MINK A ventilated box vans to insulated meat vans as a wartime measure. By 1922 refrigerated ships were bringing large volumes of 'green' bananas. 258 of the insulated vans were reconverted with steam warming apparatus added to ripen the bananas as they travelled to market.
This van is finished as British Railways W93370 in the bauxite livery applied by BR to identify vacuum train brake fitted wagons.

Pack of three Southern Railway diagram D1478 insulated banana vans in British Railways bauxite livery. Wagon numbers S50704, S50629 & S50651.

Detailed models of the distinctive Southern Railway design banana vans used for traffic from Southampton docks. Through the 1920s the Southern had hired banana vans from the LNER, so these vans were new in the 1930s, by which time the insulation alone had proven capable of maintaining the constant temperature needed for transporting fruit, so did not have the extra ventilators and steam heating of older designs.
Following the docking of a refrigerated banana ship several block trains of these banana vans would have been dispatched from Southampton to the major fruit markets across Britain. These banana trains were equipped with vacuum train brakes throughout, so ran at express goods speeds, up to 60mph.

Detailed models of the second design of insulated banana vans built by the Southern Railway for banana traffic from Southampton docks. This design was based on the Southerns' standard box van with the distinctive Lynes triple-arc roof, but equipped with added insulation and tightly sealing plug doors needed to maintain the correct temperature for transporting fruit to market.

The Diagram 1410 van was the most numerous ventilated van built by the London & South Western Railway (LSWR). Construction began in 1885 and more than 1,000 were built, with various detail differences introduced over the lifetime of the vans. These characterful vehicles feature outside framing, sliding doors and were built with a reduced height when compared with vans built later on. From 1912 the LSWR built further vans to the new Diagram 1406 which were some 7 inches taller than the Diagram 1410, and one such van is the subject of this model. Depicting a van which has survived to Nationalisation, this model sports Lift Link brakes, Panter axle boxes and plain tapered buffers. Later in 1912, the Diagram 1408 van was introduced which featured hinged doors rather than sliding – this allowed the van body to be slightly wider, increasing the payload. Both the Diagram 1410 and 1408 van also feature in the EFE Rail range.

The loading gauge on British railways could preclude the movement of tall goods on normal wagons. One solution to this was to lower the centre of the wagon so that the goods sat closer to the rail. A new model of the GWR diagram AA20 goods train brake van, coded Toad, which was introduced in 1934.
This Rapido Trains model has been designed using works drawings and incorporates a number of different optional fittings to replicate variations between individual vehicles including different roof rain strips, different height footboards and different wheelsets. The model includes a full interior alongside a removable roof.
The requirement for brakevans on fully-fitted trains ended in 1968 but that didn’t mean the end of the ‘Toads’. Many were adopted by the engineering departments who found the plate-sided verandah ideal for transporting tools, while the cabin made an ideal mess van. A large number of GWR ‘Toads’ including several AA20s have been preserved.

These distinctive vans were heavily influenced by Midland Railway practice, as adapted to the more flexible dual-veranda design introduced in 1910. The SECR built 50 new vans to this design and 25 older single-veranda vans were rebuilt, with detail differences between the original and new ends. Both types have been tooled. Examples survived into British Railways ownership, with at least 1 survivor on the Kent & East Sussex Railway.

A detailed model of the GWR diagram V16 vacuum brake fitted ventilated box van as converted to an insulated meat van. An order was issued in 1918 for the conversion of 300 vans to boost the fleet of meat vans during WW1, the diagram X6 vans having added insulation and the end bonnet vents sealed, though not removed to allow reconversion back to ventilated vans. For at least 285 of these conversions the extra insulation was retained as in 1922 these vans were further adapted as insulated and steam heated vans for banana traffic.
Model finished in GWR goods dark grey livery with 25in height lettering, as used in the pre-grouping era.

In May 1918 an order was issued to convert 300 GWR diagram V16 vacuum brake fitted MINK A ventilated box vans to insulated meat vans as a wartime measure. By 1922 refrigerated ships were bringing large volumes of 'green' bananas. 258 of the insulated vans were reconverted with steam warming apparatus added to ripen the bananas as they travelled to market.
This van is finished as 93563 in the GWRs dark grey goods wagon livery with the post-1942 lettering applied to these vans as they were overhauled after WW2 ready for the return of banana imports.

‘Mogo’ vans were railway vans built by Great Western Railway (GWR) in order to transport motor vehicles. Each van could only take a single vehicle which was loaded by driving through doors in the end of the van. The van additionally featured side doors so that it could be used to transport normal goods if not needed as a motor transporter. 350 wagons were built by GWR with the first appearing in 1933.

One of the key drivers of industrial growth throughout the 20th century was the idea that good could be transported in standardised containers. Flat wagons provided a huge amount of versatility due to the fact that goods could be loaded into the container before being placed onto a train, and the container could be removed at the other end to continue its journey to the customer.

The most common type of Conflat wagon was the Conflat A which could carry two type A containers or a single type B container. The Conflat B wagon was able to carry wider containers such as a pair of AFP frozen food containers.

The loading gauge on British railways could preclude the movement of tall goods on normal wagons. One solution to this was to lower the centre of the wagon so that the goods sat closer to the rail. Lowmac wagons feature a distinctive shape; a flat platform in the centre with sloped platforms that rose up towards the ends making room for the wheels underneath.

The GWR, and subsequently BR, built open wagons like the one depicted by this Bachmann Branchline model specifically for china clay traffic. With a 9ft wheelbase and 12T capacity, the wooden planked body sat on top of a metal underframe and our model reflects this, with fine detailing engraved and moulded onto the body. The chassis meanwhile incorporates brake gear and sports tie-bars between the axleboxes. Decorated to the same high standard as any Bachmann Branchline product, the model also includes a representation of the tent hood fitted to the wagon to protect the valuable china clay load – these hoods replacing the earlier tarpaulin covers.

A nicely detailed model of the standard GWR design of guard's brake van, with the distinctive large enclosed verandah painted in the British Railways goods grey livery.

The ex-GWR brake vans were gradually withdrawn from general use under BR ownership as the brake wheel was outside the cabin, but many continued in service on Western region anyway. This van is labelled as being allocated to Banbury.
Later the engineers found the enclosed verandahs to be most useful for the secure storage of tools etc, resulting the GWR vans being found all over the BR network well into the 1980s!

A nicely detailed model of the GWR pattern guards' brake van painted in the British railways bauxite brown colour and allocated to Avonmouth.

The single-ended GWR brake vans were withdrawn from traffic use in the 1960s, as national agreements with the unions required access to both ends of brake vans. However hundreds of the GWR vans found a home with the engineers who appreaciated the large enclosed van section and solid-sided veranda which prevented loose items and tools from being lost 'overboard' while travelling.

The BR Standard 20 Ton Brake Van is a classic vehicle and a must for any freight collection or goods yard scene. A mandatory requirement as part of all goods trains until 1968, and in use well into the 1980s with unfitted trains and other selected services, the brake van provided braking facilities and offered the Guard a refuge from the elements in which to stay warm and dry, whilst observing operations via the end windows or side duckets.

Sometimes known as Pill Box vans these guards brake vans were designed for the Southern Railway in the 1930s, showing the steady development from the short wheelbase brake vans of earlier years towards the familiar BR standard design of the 1950s. The longer wheelbase (distance between the axles) provided a better ride for the guard, also allowing an increase in the weight and therefore effectiveness of the hand brake. Side lookout duckets allowed the guard to keep an eye on the running of the train and to watch for signals which may need him to apply the brake to help bring the train to a halt.

The Warwell wagons were built during WW2 to carry tanks arriving from the USA. After 1945 a small fleet was retained by the British Army for moving tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) in the UK and Germany. Surplus wagons were passed on to British Railways, being used as heavy duty road vehicle carriers and for steel traffic.
This model replicates wagon M360337, a warwell allocated to the LMS after the war and painted in the BR goods grey livery as a wagon in general goods service. These 50 ton capacity wagons with sloped ends were used to carry heavy road vehicles by end loading, while the depressed centre well allowed large metal castings to be loaded. Eras 4-6.
