This kit builds a detailed model of the Midland Railway design 6-wheel composite coach with a lavatory compartment to diagram 516.The installation of a lavatory, usually between two compartments, was one of the first improvements in passenger facilities provided on long distance trains. The introduction of corridor trains in the late 1880s relagated the lavatory stock to secondary duties, but these coaches continued to serve on long-distance stopping trains.

These vans were often used as parcels vans at times of peak demand and after the introduction of newer vehicles for the milk and fruit traffic.
